The name of Charles Dickens’ famous curmudgeon in A Christmas Carol has passed into the language as a noun: “scrooge—a miserly, selfish person.” One year, our family made the word a verb and an adjective as well. We had a new approach to gift-giving—and a memorable Christmas.
